The Chinese Wall – Great Wall of Chinese – Facts
The Chinese wall or the Great Wall of China is a series of walls along the east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China. It is about 13,000 miles long. The main objective of constructing the wall was to protect the Chinese states and empires from the raids and invasions from outsiders. In addition, it also assisted the border controls, regulation of trade, control of immigration and emigration, and the imposition of duties on goods.
The Great Wall of China has a very long history. Some parts of the wall were built as early as the 7th century BC; these were later made bigger and stronger. The walls were built in different centuries by different dynasties to protect their territories. The majority of the wall we see today was built by the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). According to the China’s State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the wall spans 15 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities.
Construction of the Wall
Although the construction of the wall is attributed to various dynasties and emperors, the work was carried out by soldiers, peasants and prisoners. Stone, soil, sand and brick were the main materials used for the construction; wood was also used as an auxiliary material.
The Chinese wall is not only a wall, but it is also a defensive structure since it also consists of fortresses, watch towers, and beacon towers.
The Mexico Wall – Facts
Mexico wall is the proposed wall along the border of Mexico and the United States. On 25th January 2017, the US president Donald Trump officially announced the construction of a Mexico wall. The main objective of this construction is to keep out drug cartels from the United States and to prevent illegal immigration.
Mexico-United States border is one of the most frequently crossed international border in the world, and is 1,989 miles in length, covering a variety of terrains. According to Mr Trump, the wall will be about 1000 miles long since some of the border is already protected by natural obstacles. However, about one-third of the border (about 650 miles) already has a series of walls and fences, built during previous government projects.
The specific details such as the design, cost, environmental impact, etc. of this proposed wall have not been officially announced as of yet. Nevertheless, there are many speculations about the construction; most experts state that the wall will be built using concrete and will cost about $ 10-25 billion.
